“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” Psalm 46:1
Setting: Written after God gave Hezekiah victory over Sennacherib and the Assyrian army (II Kings 18-19; II Chronicles 32; Isaiah 36-37).
Even today, God’s people turn to this Psalm when it seems that all hope is lost!
Outline: Psalm 46 can be divided into three sections, each ending with the word “Selah.”
- The Sufficiency of God, We see His Protection – The Refuge (1-3)
- The Security of God, We see His Presence – The River (4-7)
- The Supremacy of God, We see His Position –The Ruler (8-11)
