Adversity

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”     Psalm 46:1

Setting:  Written after God gave Hezekiah victory over Sennacherib and the Assyrian army (II Kings 18-19; II Chronicles 32; Isaiah 36-37).

Even today, God’s people turn to this Psalm when it seems that all hope is lost!

Outline:  Psalm 46 can be divided into three sections, each ending with the word “Selah.”

  • The Sufficiency of God, We see His Protection – The Refuge (1-3)
  • The Security of God, We see His Presence – The River (4-7)
  • The Supremacy of God, We see His Position –The Ruler (8-11)

Note:  Psalm 46 was Martin Luther’s favorite Psalm and is the basis for his hymn, “A Mighty Fortress is our God.”

Additional Verses:

  • I Peter 1:6-7
  • I Peter 4:19
  • I Peter 5:10
  • James 1:2-4
  • Psalm 119:75-76
